Your Systems Are Louder Than Your Intentions
What predicts behavior is the system you built long before you needed motivation.
Every night for three months, David set his intention before bed. Tomorrow he would wake up early and write for thirty minutes before checking anything else. He believed it completely each time he set it. He had even told two friends about the plan, hoping the accountability would help it stick.
Nearly every morning, the same sequence played out instead. His phone sat charging on the nightstand, exactly where it always sat. His alarm woke him, leading to an automatic grab. After a few minutes of email and social media, forty minutes had passed, derailing his planned morning. His laptop, the actual tool the writing required, stayed closed in the other room, exactly where it always stayed.
